Journaling - The Sacred Practice That Helped Me Hear My Higher Self

For a long time, I believed you had to write by hand to truly access those golden nuggets buried deep in the subconscious. That pen-to-paper magic was the only real way to receive guidance from my higher self. But life had other plans. A period of intense nerve pain on the right side of my body made it impossible to write by hand, forcing me to explore other ways.

That’s when I had a revelation: it’s not about how you journal, it’s about your presence while doing it. Some of my most profound inner shifts happened not with a pen or a keyboard, but with my eyes shut, simply listening. That, my friend, is presence. And as a recovering over-thinker, recovering perfectionist, with “high-achiever” drive... that felt like a breakthrough.

When I talk about journaling, I don’t mean just documenting your day, writing a to-do list, or even venting (although I love a good emotional release. I call this “darkness to light” journaling, and it’s powerful). What I’m really talking about is a deeper kind of journaling: a tool for clearing the noise, tuning into your soul, and accessing truth.

It’s not just pen to paper.

It’s soul to page.

As a therapist, intuitive, healer, and a woman who has consciously rewritten her story many times, I’ve learned this: journaling can be a direct portal back to who you really are. But it requires something deeper than a morning routine or a list of prompts. It requires presence. Stillness. Nothingness. A willingness to be radically honest with yourself, and let the words come through without resistance. And it does take practice, therefore be kind to yourself with this process.

Here are a few of the journaling styles I use and teach:

1. Automatic Writing

This is your uncensored sacred release. I call the first few minutes this mind vomit; a messy spill of thoughts that eventually turns into wisdom.

But here’s the catch: most people stop too early. They write the chaos but never reach the gold. Keep writing past the mind chatter. Don’t edit. Don’t judge it. Just let the words pour out, even if they make no sense at first. You’re clearing static... and eventually, you’ll land in something deeper.

2. Higher Self Chit Chat

This is when journaling becomes a dialogue with your higher self, your guides, your soul.

Ask questions like:

·       What do I need to hear right now?

·       What part of me is speaking?

·       What am I not willing to see?

·       What would love say in this moment?

Don’t overthink it. Don’t pause. Just let the answers flow. You’ll be surprised what comes through when you get out of the way.

When a pause kicks in, ask another question – literally have a conversation – you may find it will even be quite funny and cheeky!

3. Belief Uncovering + Rewriting

This one is juicy and closely tied to my Energy Psychology work.

Start by writing down a belief that’s looping in your mind. Something like:
“I’m falling behind” or “I can’t trust people.”

Or start with something you want to do, but haven’t followed through on. For example, a while back, I made a pact to do yin yoga every day to support my healing. Six months later, I still hadn’t done it. So I asked myself: What’s the excuse? I wrote: “Time and energy.” Then I journaled about the excuse.

Because yes, those were real and true valid reasons for me where I was at. I was dealing with chronic fatigue. But I also knew they were linked to deeper beliefs: “I am not a priority”, “Rest isn’t productive,” or “Healing takes too much effort” “Healing is boring”, “I don’t want to do what I’m told” (even from myself, haha) .

The truth? We often make “reasonable” excuses that are still rooted in limitation.

I gave myself my own advice (as I often have to do): If you want different results, you have to be willing to bust old truths. Choose what you want. Let the universe show you how. Stop trying to control it all or assuming it's not possible. That’s not truth. That’s social conditioning.

Try asking:

·       Is this belief mine?

·       Where did it begin?

·       What belief would feel more aligned with who I would like to be?

And while this may not sound like traditional journaling, writing it out makes the difference. Without that, you’ll stay stuck in the ‘excuse’ loop, mentally circling the problem without allowing room for the solution to show itself to you effortlessly.

4. Future Self Activation

Think of something meaningful you’d love to do, like write a book, start a new chapter of life, or create something from the soul.

Now journal from the version of you who’s already done it.

How do they speak? What do they believe? What habits or choices got them there? What have they let go of?

This kind of journaling taps you into your future self’s frequency so you can collapse time and start living as that person now.

My Rule for Journaling?

There are no rules.

You don’t have to journal every day.

You don’t need a beautiful notebook.

You don’t need to be tidy or have perfect grammar (I can’t even read my handwriting half the time).

All you need is a willingness to meet yourself on the page. No masks. No pretending. Just raw presence.

To me, journaling is a sacred act of self-responsibility, a moment to remember:
I am the author here. I am the creator of my life experience.

You may not have a conscious say in your soul’s purpose, but you do have a say in how you ride your journey!

Would you love a guided journaling practice or a few soul-deep prompts delivered to your inbox?
